MIP Holds Workshops as Part of Gender Equality Campaign
During February-March 2019, a number of workshops on European standards of journalism and gender balance in public communications were held within the framework of a communication campaign titled “In the Profession, All Are Equal.” The workshops were organised by the Ministry of Information Policy of Ukraine together with the Government Commissioner for Gender Policy, the Sub-Committee on Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations, and Women's Rights Protection League “Harmony of Equal,” an NGO.
The workshops discussed cases of discrimination and sexism in Ukrainian media and advertising; the gender equality legal framework; and European mechanisms of countering discrimination in the media.
The workshops were successfully held at the National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy, the National Pedagogical Drahomanov University and the Institute of International Relations of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. They were attended by nearly 200 students and lecturers of liberal arts majors.
Speakers included Kateryna Levchenko, Government Commissioner for Gender Equality; Iryna Suslova, Ukraine’s MP; Oleksandra Holub, a media expert; and Liudmyla Vasylenko and Illia Udovychenko, representatives of the Ministry of Information Policy.
According to Liudmyla Vasylenko, Head of the Sector for European Integration of the Ministry, working with youth and liberal arts students is a key element in shaping European principles of non-discrimination in media and public communications.
