Zolotukhin: Sexism Not "Playing into Hands of Advertising and Mass Media"

On 29 May 2019, the Deputy Minister of Information Policy of Ukraine, Dmytro Zolotukhin, took part in a panel discussion on gender issues in advertising titled “Pattern Breaking: 3S at Gunpoint,” which took part within the framework of Ukrainian Creative Awards in Odesa.

The Deputy Minister stressed that the Ministry of Information Policy is for addressing gender stereotypes in advertising and mass media in general. “Sexism not only adds to inequality in society and impairs the dignity of men and women—the use of such discriminatory images does not play into the hands of advertising buyers, since it may be condemned by the public. Therefore, the ‘sex sells’ rule is not an uncontested truth already,” Mr Zolotukhin was quoted as saying.

Other speakers at the discussion included Iryna Lylyk, president of the Ukrainian Marketing Association, an NGO; Olena Davlikanova, project coordinator at the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung in Ukraine; and Justina Raižytė, development and policy manager at the European Advertising Standards Alliance.
