Borodianskyi, Polish Ambassador Discuss Cooperation Regarding Searching, Restoring Commemoration Sites

On 19 September 2019, Volodymyr Borodianskyi, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, held a meeting with Bartosz Cichocki, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Poland to Ukraine.

The sides discussed the two countries’ cooperation in the field of searching and restoring burial sites and monuments.

“The meeting took place pursuant to the arrangements between the Presidents of Ukraine and Poland. For my part, I confirmed the Ukrainian President’s statement regarding the lifting of restrictions on the search and exhumation work. Consequently, I received from the Ambassador a request by the Polish side to grant appropriate permits, and promised to provide the reply at the earliest convenience,” the Minister said.

Mr Borodianskyi explained to the Polish side what procedures are in place in Ukraine with respect to the search work, and called upon the Polish colleagues to submit necessary paperwork as soon as possible so as to enable the search and exhumation work.

The Minister ensured his full support for the whole process and expressed his hopes for close cooperation with the Ministry of Culture of Poland and the Institute of National Remembrance of Poland in matter of restoring Ukraine’s commemoration sites in Poland.

In addition, Mr Borodianskyi called upon the Polish side to investigate all acts of vandalism and take appropriate action to prevent Ukrainian burial and commemoration sites in Poland from being plundered in the future.

In Poland, there are 93 monuments and commemoration sites related to Ukrainian history.
